Paro
The flight into the Himalayas offers breathtaking views of the great peaks, bringing you to Paro’s picturesque airstrip at an altitude of 7,000 ft. Enjoy a drive through the beautiful Paro Valley to your hotel, situated on a breezy, pine-scented hillside. Explore the charming town of Paro and visit the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1647 to commemorate a victory over Tibetan invaders. On clear days, see the white-domed peak of sacred Mt. Jomolhari. Visit the Ta Dzong, the national museum housed in an ancient watchtower, showcasing a fine collection of ancient thangka paintings, textiles, weapons, and other artifacts.
Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)
Experience a memorable hike to Taktsang Monastery, perched 9,800 ft above the valley floor. Starting from Satsam Chorten, embark on a 2-hour hike to the monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest. Enjoy refreshments or lunch at the Taktsang Cafeteria, which offers stunning views of the monastery.
Thimphu
Travel through the Paro and Thimphu valleys to reach Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu. Explore the city and visit notable sites such as the National Memorial Chorten and the Handicrafts Emporium. Thimphu offers a rich cultural experience with visits to the Painting School of Buddhist Arts, the National Library with its vast collection of ancient Buddhist manuscripts, and the Indigenous Hospital where centuries-old healing arts are still practiced.
Punakha/Wangdue
Journey to Punakha via the Dochula Pass (3,100m), offering enchanting views of the Himalayas on clear days. In Punakha, view the Punakha Dzong from the outside. This fort is situated at the junction of the Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River), with their waters merging in front of the Dzong. The Dzong serves as the winter residence for the Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of the central monk body. From Punakha, rejoin the east-west highway at Lobesa and continue eastwards.
